Houstonians Support Caravan to ChiapasThis past Saturday, the 13th, local supporters of the indigenous peoples struggle in Chiaps Mexico gathered at the Shape Community Center to support the Chiapas Caravan and hand over a good amount of needed humanitarian aid, bound for Chiapas. The gathering of Caravanistas and supporters were welcomed by Deloyd Parker, Director of the Shape Center, who pointed out that the people of Chiapas, were part of the Shape family, with many of the same struggles. One of the Caravan drivers, Billy, pointed out that the aid was an act of solidarity, as opposed to traditional charity.
The caravans to Chiapas began in 1995, as a program of support for the indigenous struggle for land, liberty, and democracy in the southern state of Chiapas. In addition to delivering much needed material aid, the caravan also seeks to raise awareness about the effects of US foreign policy on the indigenous people of Mexico.
In addition to the aid bound for Chiapas, there are also more than a dozen computers bound for Oaxaca.
